NextNow HyperMove - Fast. Smart. Limitless.
NextNow Ride is an African ride-hailing service that launched in Johannesburg on May 10, 2021, with the goal of becoming a truly home-grown mobility platform for the continent.
Year :
2019
Industry :
Product/Services
Client :
Johnson
Project Duration :
1 month

Problem :
The NextNow Ride App was created to solve a fragmented and impersonal ride experience where riders often had to choose between cost and convenience, with little control over driver selection or ride conditions. Many users also had concerns about safety and trust because existing ride-hailing platforms lacked transparent safety protocols and thorough driver verification. On top of that, the balance between affordability for riders and fair earnings for drivers was skewed, as high platform commissions reduced driver income while still keeping fares high, which hurt loyalty on both sides.

Solution :
To address these issues, the NextNow Ride App introduced an empowered rider experience by allowing passengers to set personal preferences such as choosing a favorite driver, selecting a driver based on gender, or requesting a quiet, music-free ride. The platform enhanced safety through comprehensive driver verification, mandatory mask usage, regular sanitization protocols, and the ability for riders to share their trip status with trusted contacts. At the same time, the business model supported drivers by charging a much lower commission rate of around 10%, enabling flexible scheduling, and ensuring fast weekly payouts, which helped keep rides affordable while improving driver satisfaction.

Challenge :
Developing this solution was not without challenges. One of the main hurdles was earning user trust in a competitive market dominated by established players, which meant the app’s design and communication had to emphasize safety, quality, and reliability from the start. Another challenge was managing design complexity—features like driver gender selection, favorite driver lists, quiet ride options, advanced scheduling, and real-time tracking all had to be presented in a way that felt intuitive and uncluttered for the user. Additionally, finding the right balance between rider expectations and driver needs required careful planning of the user journey so that both groups benefited equally from the platform’s features and policies.
Summary :
In summary, the NextNow Ride App reimagines ride-hailing through a user-centered approach that blends choice, safety, and fairness. By empowering riders with personalization and peace of mind, while also improving earnings, flexibility, and respect for drivers, it offers a more sustainable and trustworthy mobility solution. This case study highlights how thoughtful UX design and a fair business model can work together to redefine an entire service experience.
